For example, I heard a guy plays "poker" with the numbers on his odometer.

When I was a kid, we played "the license plate game" so much that now it's a subconscious activity whenever I'm driving.

It's where you add up all the numbers on the license plate in front of you (ex: 83F1XP = 12), then you add THOSE numbers together... until you get down to a single-digit number (ex: 1+2=3). Then, if that digit was actually on the license plate, then you score one point for the # of times that number appeared (ex: 1 point here).

Then, it's the next person's turn to take the next license plate that passes... Keep a running tally of points scored, and you can kill some time on a long trip!

I play the "people watching" game when driving, keeping an eye out for idiot driver that look like they're about to do something stupid on the road. Occasionally I keep track of cell phone users I see by gender. There are usually more women than men, especially in the evening.

Mincemeat,

I never considered that a game but I guess it is. I do it quite often. I know that it should take me 11 minutes from when I enter The Great Swamp to when I pull into the office parking lot so I do calculations in my head against the car's clock. Same thing on longer trips or against what Yahoo Maps says it should take me.

I mentally compute average speed and percentage of trip completed. It keeps me aware of what's going on during long trips. At times I'll pick out a landmark up ahead and try to determine how far away it is, then use the odometer to see how accurate I was.

When in back to back traffic and we're not moving I play the tag game. Make up a word for each letter and find a way to mix in the numbers the space in between is considered a wild spot. Anything goes.
Ex: (ucc 32b) U-ugly C-cereal C-critters with 32 B-bugs.
It does get challenging.

When I was a kid, in the days of cheap gas and distant relatives, my brother and I used to compete to see how many different out-of-state plates we could find during a trip. You could only count a state once, no matter how many times you saw plates from that state.

Nowadays driving myself is just a task to be done. No time for games.
