There should be a box when a station suddenly stops pumping gas. Either temporary or long term. This could alert motorists looking for fuel. Right now the option is to add coments.

Some of my towns East Indian (without prejudice, only stating fact) gas station owners, run out of one type of gas or another. How about a box to click on, to indicate - out of gas.

herndonks, you need to report all those who you know are posting bogus prices. They don't have to be banned but they do need to know that it is unacceptable and that GB is watching them.

There is nothing like a closed station to let you see which members are improperly posting prices without actually observing prices at the station. When I joined GB in December 2011 I noticed that several members reported prices for a couple of weeks for a station near where I work that had been closed and actually demolished (it was a vacant lot). Someone finally marked the station as closed in the MSL. A few weeks ago a station in the same area quit selling gas temporarily and removed prices from their signs and turned off their pumps. The price reporting by several GB members continued for almost a week before I edited the MSL to show it temporarily closed. These members are just re-reporting prices reported earlier by other members, and are often not accurate, especially with prices going up so quickly. This all would be amusing, except that the improper posting of prices makes using GB as a tool to find cheap gas difficult in the Edgewood, MD, area.

"Not just closed, but also if the site doesn't have Diesel."

Or any grade a station doesn't sell.

If when you tried to enter a price for the station you were alerted the station was closed, that would solve the problem. If a station is closed, there is no reason to have it in any price list.

I understand the OP's desire is NOT to zero-out or delete the station from the price list but to have it ON the price board but listed as closed SO THAT people can be alertyed of the situation and not pull off the highway or drive out of there way to go there.

There is no provision for that and frankly, it might clutter up the board with non-data. Changing the icon on the price maps would be a good idea and preventing people from posting prices to stations that aren't listed as active would be good.

heyjude,

Did you mark it as closed in the MSL?

This is currently a problem and I and others have suggested that if a station is marked in nay form of closed or deleted in the MSL, no one should be able to post prices for that station.

Zero out the prices for the non-existent station whenever you see them, and if it continues, PM a moderator.

Scrapheap said:"Nothing prevents someone from reporting prices from these stations using an FSL or free form entry on the full site."

I noticed this problem with a member who kept posting prices for a closed station and boarded up. I couldn't understand how the station was coming up on searches when it was marked temporarily closed and the prices were zeroed out. I now realize that the member was fraudulently posting prices from his FSL.

You can enter prices for any station regardless of how it is listed. And all stations show up on all the maps.

If a station is not pumping gas, any reported prices from the station should be deleted. You can do this only on the full site by doing an area search, clicking on the price and entering a price of 0. You can also delete prices by finding the station on the map, clicking on the price and entering a price of 0.

To mark a station as temporarily closed, either bring the station up on the map, click on Edit Station Info and change the status to temporarily closed. You can also click on Gas Prices, Master Station List, search for the station and change its status to temporarily closed.

Stations marked as temporarily closed will not show up on the apps and will have a warning of This Station Is Temporarily Closed if it is brought up on the map. Nothing prevents someone from reporting prices from these stations using an FSL or free form entry on the full site.

There is a station I normally purchase fuel from. They were closed temporarily. The station is just off 95. I there were a way to advise other travelers of the situation.

I think what he is getting at is that prices may remain in the system when they aren't selling gas, so there should be an indicator in the pricing (vs. in the MSL). Maybe this also involves the "out-of-gas" issue that comes up from time to time.

If there is to be, for the foreseable future, no link from MSL status to the prices lists/maps, perhaps such an indicator in the pricing would be useful.

Stations locally, and I assume in other locations, remove their prices when the station is no longer operating. Consequently no gas station prices are posted. Unless, I presume, someone is making a mistake and erroneously updates the wrong station on their "Favorites" list. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't see this as a problem.

First, here are the instructions to "Help us Build a Master Station List"

In order to help improve the accuracy of the stations being posted on the web site, we are undertaking an initiative to build a master station list. This will allow us to move forward with new mapping features and other great new gas price tools.

Instructions:

Step 1:
- Before submitting a new station to the list please check and see if it has already been added to the list
- To find an already added station use the Search Box on the left
- When using the search box we suggest first entering only the station name and the street name

Step 2:
- If a station appears in the list:
- The 'Show On Map' link will center the map on that station and show its details
- The 'EDIT' link will take you to another screen where you will be able to edit the station
- The 'Delete' link will take you to another screen where you will be able to submit the station for deletion
- If the station you wish to enter is not found in the search result list:
- The 'CLICK HERE TO ADD A NEW STATION' link will take you to another screen where you will be able to add a new station

Second, when you click to edit the station, you can update the Current Station Status, indicating it's Active / Open for Business, Closed - Temporarily, Closed - Permanently, or if it should be Deleted (as a duplicate, for Abuse or forbeing a Fake, or being a Fake, or for Other reasons.

This seems to be a simple, already in place, solution.

That said, if a gas station suddenly stops pumping gas, and it's evident that it's temporary (emergency repair, shortages, etc.) I don't think that's a serious problem because there's almost always an adjacent gas station, and simply not posting prices for the non-operational station for several days will resolve the problem.. But that's just my thinking.
