Gasoline Demand Is At An 18 Month High

The Business Insider -- Maybe all the talk about peak gasoline is bunk. With the price of gas low, and peak driving season upon us, Mastercard reports that U.S. gasoline consumption was the highest it's been in a year and a half:

Bloomberg: Motorists bought an average 9.695 million barrels of gasoline a day in the week ended June 26, MasterCard, the second-biggest credit-card company, said in its weekly SpendingPulse report. That’s 1.6 percent above a year earlier and the most since the week ended Dec. 21, 2007.

Maybe people who used to pay cash for gas don't have any cash, so they are charging their gas on credit cards that they will not be able to pay because they don't have jobs.

I think people are using "Mastercard" due to the fact they have no job, and no cash. With no cash, you have no choice but "Mastercard" or "Visa" if you must drive. This is misleading from what I can see.

Bloomberg is truly a fair and balanced news outlet, I do not think they would endorse spinning a story out of perspective with inaccurate figures.

Good point jedintheshed.
Discover card gives a 5% rebate on automotive items - but, only on the first to $100 of purchases per month.

Read the article. All MasterCard is saying is that more people charged thier gas purchase on a charge card.

It's more likely that consumers are using their credit cards more to buy gas because they don't have jobs! This would skew Master Card's data toward a higher demand

Demand is not at an 18 month high.

Mastercard mines its sales data. It does NOT account for changes in price levels (inflation), tax rate changes by state or municipality, nor does it account for inventory changes.

Their data is very suspect.

But will the increased driving last past the summer. Many families are hurting with no jobs and higher costs for everything else.

So, we return to our old habits after the crisis is over.

Oh, wait. The crisis ISN'T over yet. Just an easier hit on the wallet.

This sounds like propaganda news you know the kind to falsely justify the rise in gas prices. The most of the other reports show that the demand at an all time low.

Where did this survey come from. M/C is reporting something wrong -- gasoline consumption, from many other reports is down.

This contradicts a lot of the other stories. But it makes some degree of sense - it is driving season AND the prices are a LOT lower than last year AND it appears that the worst of the job losses are behind us. Supply and demand work, regardless of what socialist leaning politicians think.

I would tend to believe the gasoline retailers and peto folks for the true facts. It may just be that folks are short on funds and charging more rather than debit cards or cash.
