THE VILLAGES — Consumer pocketbooks grew a little fatter Thursday at the gasoline pumps.

Crude oil prices plummeted on the New York Mercantile Exchange, fueling speculation that gasoline prices might fall even further than in recent days.

This is more good news for Villages-area residents, who over the past week or so have seen gasoline retailers cut almost a dime off the price of a gallon of unleaded regular.

Some of The Villages retailers posted prices around $2.54 a gallon, about 9 cents off the price they charged about a week ago.

“It’s dropping everywhere,” said Jim Smith, president and chief executive officer of the Tallahassee-based Florida Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Store Association

Average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline has only dropped about $.03 in the last 2 weeks.

There is no rhyme or reason on how thes prices are set, ad if ther is, the oil companies keep it a big secret.
