We are usually right at 40 mpg with the diesel Jetta. We also had an 08 model which got up to 42 on the highway. Great cars!

There was a very interesting thread regarding breaking in a diesel engine on the Vortex forums ( I believe). You might want to Google it. Lots of good info: don't use cruise control; only so many rpms initially then increasing; some full throttle applications. All this stuff to really seat the engine. Diesels are a bit different, and the people who drive them are fanatics. Anyway, thought you might be interested. There is also a thread regarding filling up. It goes back a couple of years and the experiences are just plain hilarious. Enjoy the Jetta TDI. Haven't test driven the Golf TDI but maybe. I really have to stay away from car shopping at the moment as I'm not even close to purchasing. Got some work to do on my 97 Maxima....find someplace to reupholster the leather seats. Cheers

You might be interested in "Fuelly". Google it. Great way to track your mileage and fuel costs etc. Yeah, I know that there is a similar feature here but with fuelly you can sms text the info to enter and it will update your stats and send you back a message with your current mileage. You can also check out what others are getting in the same or different cars. Will also tell you what you are paying, ie cents per mile. It's pretty cool to fuel up and text in your info and get an immediate response AND have the site updated. Check it out.

Don't get me wrong, I like the diesels. I've been thinking about them for a while. I just don't know if the cost per mile (diesel vs gas) is an advantage right now seeing that there are a number of cars that are returning mpg comparable to diesels. I've heard good things about the Golf TDI but want something a bit more sporty. A JSW TDI has been drawing me as well as a GTI (yeah non diesel but the interior and the performance is to die for). Wish VW would bring the GTD, then I wouldn't have an excuse. Actually, won't be in the market for a new car for a year or so. Should be interesting with all the choices: Focus ST; Chevy Volt; maybe the Alfa MiTo or Juilietta. Just too many choices and probably more coming along. Good luck with Jetta. I usually try and post diesel prices and will continue to do so. Are you driving a diesel? Been thinking about a VW JSW TDI but diesel is rising even more than regular gas and I'm not sure that the mileage is worth the additional cost.
