AP IMPACT: Clunker pickups traded for new pickups

Associated Press -- WASHINGTON – The most common deals under the government's $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program, aimed at putting more fuel-efficient cars on the road, replaced old Ford or Chevrolet pickups with new ones that got only marginally better gas mileage, according to an analysis of new federal data by The Associated Press.

The single most common swap — which occurred more than 8,200 times — involved Ford F150 pickup owners who took advantage of a government rebate to trade their old trucks for new Ford F150s. They were 17 times more likely to buy a new F150 than, say, a Toyota Prius. The fuel economy for the new trucks ranged from 15 mpg to 17 mpg based on engine size and other factors, an improvement of just 1 mpg to 3 mpg over the clunkers.

Owners of thousands more large old Chevrolet an

well, most people buy pickups because they use the features with the bed... unless you buy a pickup and don't use its features, then you can sacrifice an economic vehicle... people hae to start to understand that pickups are a convenience feature.

No shock in this report. Cash for clunkers pretty much replaced one guzzler with another. If we do this every couple of years, the owners of gas guzzlers can live off of the government incentives and keep wasting gas. A better idea would have been to pick an age such as ten years and declare any vehicle older than that age qualified.

No surprise here. If you look at my posts during the 'Clunkers' program I was stating that it should be limited to domestic manufacturers and at least 7 MPG better mileage. I still think it was a good program to get cash flowing thru the economy, but I still say it should have been focused on helping Americans - not any other nation.

Unfortunately the pro-business Republican (or since they are purging the moderates should we just call them the Conservative party?) didn't want to help America, just their Corporate masters. Just another reason why we need Publicly-Funded elections.

That is EXACTLY what I would have done - if my F150 had not been two years too old to qualify. What did they expect for such a handout? Buy a minitruck
that is too small to haul anything? The same old change.

I would be surprised if anyone traded a F150 for a Prius.

so let's see what this really means. Looks like we bailed out Ford too. Just in a different way. Didn't FoMoCo just report outstanding quarterly results? Yup, thank you very much clunkers. And where do they make the most profit. Yup, F150. We got sucker again. You can bet their execs will get fat bonus checks.

The only thing clunkers did was GIVE the Japanese and Koreans a couple of billion dollars. Sad when the Russians put together a better program than our leaders did. Russians did not send any money to the Japanese or Koreans.

No surprises here. Government plans like this virtually never do what they are promised or expected to do. Just remember, these same people want to be in charge of everything else in your life too.

Sorry those figures on the trucks are not as good as what some owners I know are telling me. Trucks are now in the 20mpg range... Almost double the old models!!!

Duh! Of course it didn't work well. It was a Government program designed by bureaucrats... of course at taxpayer expense. What a waste.

More stipulations should have been placed on the trade ups. This did get the car industry back on the map.

When all is said and done, and all the results have been analyzed, we will find out who got screwed on this deal. I still have a funny feeling about the CLUNKER PROGRAM in the entrails of my bowels.

The cash for clunkers program was a waste. What people didn't know is that they have to pay taxes on the money they received. Also the taxpayers are paying.

criminal! Old gas wasters replaced by new gas wasters? How stupid. Hey, I want a subsidy for replacing my 1988 BMW with a new one! $24,000 would work pretty well.

The program did little good to help the economy. It just put a few new vehicles on the road.

The cash for clunkers program was bad for the economy and didn't get the reduction in gas consumption that the administration had wanted. The same is likely to happen with the massively expensive (and unneeded) health care reform bill if it ever passes.

Why quibble, the program put lots of people to work, put money into their pockets and the economy, what did you expect from a government program, perfection?

Many labels were placed upon the program to get it through Congress. The labels may or may not have described the program accurately. For vehicles under 8500 pounds, the rules were pretty clear. What may have changed the rules was the registration weight for the license plate. If a truck has a 9000 pound plate but the vehicle alone is 5800 pounds, is the vehicle considered to be less than 8500 pounds or over 8500 pounds? The rebate rules changed at 8500 pounds.

Programs like this are what you get when you put an inexperienced person in the Whitehouse. He brought in some of the most liberal people there are and they are really running the country. He tells them what he wants and they play enforcer. We are headed towards becoming a Communist/Socialist country. The more Obama and his crowd get control of these the worse off we will be. Health Care reforms scare the living daylights out of me, if they pass it the way it is we won't be able to afford insurance or the fines for not buying it. Pelosi's bill assumes most people would rather pay the fine. What happens when people buy government insurance and the government can't afford everyone?

My '03 Dodge Ram with a 5.9 Cummins averaged 19.5 mpg for 3,800 miles. Driving in National Parks, citys and highways. This could have been improved upon had their been a better axel ratio and a 6 speed transmission that had an overdrive and no compound gears.
