Fuel Efficiency is the Most Important Factor When Americans Look for a New Car

Oilprice.com -- Petrol prices have started to fall but still remain high enough to influence the actions of consumers. The American public are driving less, using less fuel, buying more fuel efficient cars, and many are actually choosing to forgo cars all together.

In order to make savings at the pump many Americans are looking to downsize their cars, buy hybrids, or buy cars with diesel engines.

us4usa: there's nothing wrong with buying a new car ... as long as you plan on keeping it for more than a few years. I drive mine routinely 12-15 years before buying a new one.

OTIS: diesel has a higher heat capacity, which means, you get more miles per gallon out of the oily diesel than the higher volatile gasoline.

Diesel makes sense when you travel longer distances. Friend of mine has a Jetta TDI (1st generation) and that vehicle gets driven about 90 miles one way every day. Mileage? About 55 mpg.

Car companies need to post the REAL gas milage. Why buy a diesel engine car when diesel is the most expensive?!

Rule #1 Never buy a new car...

Rule #2 Buy the vehicle that works best for you....

Rule #3 Go back to rule #1...

Yes, and then comes the disappointment when you take the car home and it doesn't get the mileage the salesman said it would!

I'm not looking. People without jobs seldom buy cars and the unemployment rate just went up again. It's been over 8% for 40 consecutive months.

Why wouldn't it be the most important factor, when the gas stations can jump gas prices $1.00 when someone sneezes?

And some just keep driving their paid for cars. And can prove to more economical.. no payments and lower insurance... takes some really non-existent high MPGs to offset those new car payments!

So they say. I don't agree. Safety is number one for me - and you can't get that in a small car. I want something solid between me and the other guy.
