Quite a disaster.
Hope Virginia's new governor takes note. He's in favor of drilling off our coast. Oh, joy.

That's always a real environmental danger in deep water drilling.

First put out the fire and they should cap the well till they clean up the mess. I'm sure there is a way of salvaging most of the oil, because it floats.

Agreed DellDude2 - (BTW mine is thru United HealthCare, but my employers are changing us yet again to something cheaper thru Aetna - I should be used to this since they do it every other year...)

The average Australian wouldn't take much notice to this spill since they live in the southern part of the continent, but it will raise their prices since spilled oil isn't made into gasoline.

The last paragraph of the article:
"...This week, just after the well was finally capped, the platform exploded and burned - bringing a spectacular end to the flow of oil but adding fuel to the worldwide debate over offshore drilling"

Australia was always very careful to protect their fish quality. Is this yet another reason to stop using oil and go to hydrogen? We need to stop wasting time on "the smokescreen 3" biofuels, electricity, ethanol and move forward to hydrogen, wind, solar and nuclear.

Why are we drilling millions of holes in the ground to extract crude? Because the maniacal manipulators of the world's oil cartel deceive us into believing their propagandic bull $HIT! They stuff the pockets of our elected representatives to curry favor for legislation that benefits only the special interests of "Big Oil". And they "employ" cheer leaders like the seductress Sarah who insist that we should "Drill Baby Drill". Cheer leaders like Sarah and all her conniving "Big Oil" protagonists need to put away their pompoms and shut their pie holes.
Our nation's financial stability and the livelihoods of countless hundreds of millions are in peril. Yet, the oil cartel continues to shove a gas pump hose up our A$$es. We need somebody to arrest the manipulative tactics of these scoundrels and thieves. I am certain that the wing nuts in Congress who've had their pockets stained with donations from the oil cartel will not support anything that will ease our pain at the pump. Rather, it will be the unimpeded leadership of progressive forward thinking individuals who will end our long endured suffering.

Hey NavyStore, I already have a good healthcare plan through BlueCross Blueshield, thank you very much. It is only now that I'm worried whether Team Obama will ruin it and bury the competition. Liberals aren't un-American, just... well... see things differently. :-)

DellDude2 - I'm not saying that we shouldn't go after some of the easier or existing wells, but we need to shift off fossil fuels. You don't quit smoking with the 'Uncle Buck' plan (quit cigarettes by going to cigars, a pipe then chewing tobacco...). You quit by going to the patch and a support system to break the habit.
We need something like that for our addiction to oil. (It will take between 7 & 10 years for new drilling to put oil on the street - and even if they cut that to 5 years, it doesn't help us today.)
Oh, and if the likes of Sarah Palin (or anyone) has the stones to come and tell me to my face that I'm not a 'real American' because I'm a liberal and an environmentalist, I hope you have a good health care plan. You're gonna need it...

Considering how crowded this waterway is, and the fact that it provides the main protien source (fish) for millions of people in the area, this could be a bonafide nightmare!
LanguageMan - I grew up in Tulsa and I've sailed thru the mess that Saddam Hussein created during the Gulf War, so I have a pretty unique perspective on just what an know how bad an oil spill can be. You worry about environmentalists - I worry about how we are going to feed the millions of people (much less the other species). Why do conservatives only care about themselves and what people do in their bedrooms? I still can't believe I was once one of you deluded people...

Not good! Not good at all. Only give the left, extreme environmentalists, and other more fuel to deride off-shore drilling for oil here at home while we all have to suffer more and while we become more dependent upon foreign sources of oil, gas, etc.

Not the first time there has been trouble with the Exxon Valdez. Maybe they just need to send it to the scrap yard.

Another example of the risks involved with off-shore drilling. This industry still needs more safeguards.
