Risk-Taking Rises as Oil Rigs in Gulf Drill Deeper

New York Times -- In a remote reach of the Gulf of Mexico, nearly 200 miles from shore, a floating oil platform thrusts its tentacles deep into the ocean like a giant steel octopus.

The $3 billion rig, called Perdido, can pump oil from dozens of wells nearly two miles under the sea while simultaneously drilling new ones. It is part of a wave of ultra-deep platforms — all far more sophisticated than the rig that was used to drill the ill-fated BP well that blew up in April. These platforms have sprung up far from shore and have pushed the frontiers of technology in the gulf, a region that now accounts for a quarter of the nation’s oil output.

Major offshore accidents are not common. But whether through equipment failure or human error, the risks increase as the rigs get larger and more complicated.

scotte from lost angeles posted...

"Hey if they ban them then we consumers are gonna really pay. The Eco effects from latest gulf disaster are showing no huge ill effects just as the last big Gulf spill shows very little in disaster."

.

And you base these statements on what facts?

The facts are, that the last large spill resulting from a well failure did have environmental consequences, and continues to to this day - from the 1979 Ictox I blowout. There continues to be last effects from the Exxon-Valdez spill in Prince William Sound. And, the consequences of the Macondo well blowout won't be fully known for decades - especially given that British Petroleum heavily used dispersants to deliberately hide the crude oil underwater, keeping it "out-of-sight, out-of-mind".

You were saying...?

as long as it's not BP and the safety rules are followed more to the letter it may be okay. Time will tell.

The decision making process and chain of command in such an operation needs to be precise. No tours allowed. Period.

No more of this from US in the Gulf now that Obama fraudulently took engineers signatures from a study indicating more care should be paid to deepwater (5000) feet deep wells and put the signatures to authorize a ban on all rigs 500 ft and more. Our rigs and jobs will be gone for at least 10 years now.

But the rewards are even greater. Over a million gallons of crude just spurted out of a 24 inch well.

According to Glenn Beck or one of the other extreeme right fanatics my dad listens to on the radio, the BP accident was caused by environuts forcing further offshore drilling in deep water where there are methane gas pockets under high pressure ... any thoughts on that?

We already depend too heavily on Gulf Oil Rigs. We need to place more shale oil wells on land. The Gulf is too dangerous for spills & subject to damage and blockage of shipments for 4-5 mo. of the year due to Hurricanes & storms. On land drilling is more easily protected.

. And even then, the SCF Baltica tanker is being escorted by two nuclear-powered ice breakers.

Surprised this a cheaper option with the escort ships. quicker for sure.

it has been proven time and time again: you want the BIG rewards ? You have to take the BIG risks. Americans are willing to do so and that is why (until 1/20/2009) we WERE the greatest country on earth. We can bring that spirit back Nov 2, 2010 by remembering the MOST IMPORTANT chore to do that day, so write it on your calendars:

Deep drilling is still a high risk operation and I believe that more oil can be found on land and not down a mile and a half in the water where no one can assure that the big spill won't occur again

Risk - This simply means that an accident will eventually happen.

What have you learned this past summer? I know what I learned - I'd rather have an oil spill on LAND than 2 miles below the ocean.

Pick your poison...

As long as they install proper shut-off valves, I am all for it. The economy will still need oil for at least the next several decades or longer.
